Family Room, an empty canvas

Chronicles of a Not-So-Newbie Interior Designer: Analysis

Thursday 6-8: First meeting with client at Starbucks. Talked to him about process and set dates for the first concept review of the family room and master bedroom. Conducted preliminary analysis.

Analyis Findings:

  • Family has two parents and two children under the age of 5.
  • Design should reflect Chinese heritage
  • Design should incorporate family history and progress
  • Furniture should not be completely cold and modern
  • Furniture should be comfortable, durable, stain resistant, and kid-friendly
  • Design should accomodate current flooring (beige carpet and linoleum) and updated flooring in 2 years (probably bamboo flooring and tiles)
  • Family room should have seating for approximately 10 people
  • The family room is the main sitting area, since there is no formal living room. Rather the living room would be a den with seating area.
  • Bedroom should incorporate LCD TV
  • General impression is that the client is conservative, practical, and traditional
Friday 6-9:

  • Called the model home agent and went to the client's tract house and photographed each room.
  • Conducted site measure of the living room, family room, and master bedroom.
  • Jot down ideas
